The Retreat

Our guests report sleeping a lot, eating and talking a lot, reading and playing a lot of pingpong, and most do at least a little hiking. None have reported being bored yet. Many of our guests enjoy cooking on our propane grill outside.

Our favorite activity, weather and water level permitting, is hanging out at our river frontage: fishing, swimming, eating, and sitting in "Jacuzzi Falls". It is 2 miles from the lodge door to our picnic area at the river. You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to drive the unpaved, gravel and dirt road. It is steep in some sections, and crosses our stream at one point.

We moved here from the suburbs and love the drive to the river. We think it's a very pretty, interesting, and unique drive or hike. You'll definitely feel you've gotten "away from it all"!

No 4-wheel drive vehicle? No problem: we'll take you, just ask us when you register.

Canoeing on the James River - Canoe rental is available.

Other than that, you may:

  • Spend all day reading in the hammock

  • Sunbathe on the deck (seasonal...)

  • Hike down to the stream below the lodge, or go hiking around the property (maps provided)

  • Paint some landscapes or horse portraits

  • Write poetry

  • Do some gourmet cooking using fresh herbs growing at the lodge and at our farm

  • Challenge Hugh to a bread baking contest

  • Go swimming or fishing in the James River, or just sit and watch the herons and bald eagles that live there

  • Take photos of wildflowers (May's the best for these), or the river, the woods, your friends, the horses, and our very photogenic geese, ducks, and guinea hens

  • Collect pretty feathers to take home which our guineas and geese have shed

  • Play horseshoes, shoot baskets, do soccer drills in the field

  • Have ping pong, dart, and fuse ball tournaments

  • Go swimming, fishing, or practice paddling a canoe in our farm pond, or just sit by the pond and watch the geese, ducks and guinea hens doing their daily activities (eating, playing, chasing each other)

  • Have s'mores under the stars in one of the two fire pits

  • Come over to the farm side and brush horses (give us a call and we'll get the brushes out, maybe even help you)

  • Find out our current feeding times and you can help us feed the horses and put "the birds" to bed in the evening

  • Take a picnic down to our picnic/campsite at the river, or to one of our many picnic tables in the woods and along our streams (there's one just below the lodge

  • Look for arrowheads and Stone Age tools on our property (we can suggest the best sites)

  • Jam with your musician buddies on our elevated deck, overlooking the woods and Blue Ridge Mountains, or down at the James River

  • Get ready for your upcoming half-marathon on our hilly trails, or your marathon on the gorgeous Appomattox County roads

  • Bring your Honey to the Lodge for a romantic weekend, and have your meals all catered (see list of local caterers on Links page). Bring romantic movies to watch, play ping pong and let them win. Wade in the stream below the Lodge. Cuddle together on the hammock and listen to the birds and breeze

  • Ride your touring bicycles around the beautiful country roads in our area

  • Take a short (1.5 hour); or long (6 hour) canoe float to our river frontage(leave from Joshua Falls outside of Lynchburg) or from our river frontage (3-5 hours to Bent Creek, 15 to James River State Park). (Portage fee is $35 each way)

  • Go swimming, fishing, canoeing off our river frontage (once again, our favorite)

We are frequently asked about horse riding: Horses are dangerous. You ride at your own risk. Virginia State Law covers US, not you. We currently (3/08) have ONE horse we will let you sit on, and will let you ride on a lead rope. If you are a very experienced rider, we can discuss more. There is no charge for this, carrots welcome. Riding lessons are available with advanced scheduling for $45.00 given by Carrie Whitby of Morning Glory Miniatures.
