Nearby Attractions
Rockcliffe Farm Retreat & Lodge is located in historic Appomattox County, Virginia - "Where Our Nation Reunited", and is a good base from which to explore the many attractions of Central Virginia:
- On your way here, you may want to follow the signs for "Lee's Retreat".
- During your stay, you can visit the Appomattox County National Historical Park, the scene of the signing of the terms of General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant
- The train station in downtown Appomattox, where Lee's supplies were
captured by Grant.
- The restored Cloverhill Village is nearby.
Downtown Appomattox offers:

(with music in the evenings)
- The Appomattox Gallery

1. Go into Appomattox, 12 miles and 20 minutes away:
- Get some great books, music, coffee, quiche, and desserts at Baines Books
- Get a gourmet luncheon or dinner at The Babcock House
- Have tea at the Appomattox Tea Room in the Appomattox Gallery, call 352-9590 for reservations.
- Tour the Appomattox Gallery. The new owners have a strict policy on the correct and accurate labeling of antiques, which you'll appreciate
- Visit our excellent Visitor Center and Gift Shop (across from Baines' Books)
- Take in a play at the Appomattox Courthouse Theatre, if you're here on a weekend when there's a performance
- Enjoy Railroad Festival on the second weekend in October
- Come for Civil War reenactments
- Visit Spring Creek Wine Cellar
2. Visit the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park
This is where the surrender between Generals Lee and Grant took place, ending the Civil War, and is well worth a visit. Especially fascinating for 10-year old boys of all ages.
3. Visit Cloverhill Village
Like a mini-Williamsburg, complete with period costumes
4. Morning Glory Miniature Horse Farm
11 minutes away, open by appointment (Carrie Whitby, owner, also offers riding lessons on our horses by prearrangement, $50/hour)
5. Fish central Virginia
Rockcliffe Farm is strategically located for anglers of all experience levels. Fish right here at the lodge in the James River, or at Holiday Lake State Park, Smith Mountain Lake, or Briary Creek. We love fishing, so the easy access to so many great fishing spots is no mistake!
6. Mountain View Golf Course
This is a 9-hole public-private golf course with a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Open daily to the public. (434)-352-3970.
7. James River State Park
About 40 minutes northwest of us, down James River Road. An all day canoe trip from our river frontage. Go hiking, horseback riding, fishing (no swimming). Picnic.

A Little Farther
1. Lynchburg. About 20 miles, or 30 minutes. Take Paradise Hill Road to Stage Road for the shortest route. Tons of shopping and stuff to do there.
Of particular interest:
2. Poplar Forest. About 40 minutes drive to Lynchburg. Seasonal, admission fee.
Thomas Jefferson's favorite home over Monticello!

3. Monticello.Outside of Charlottesville, 1.5 hours. Take James River Road to 60 W, then 29 N. Thomas Jefferson's most famous home. A must see. Allow all day.
Eat at the Michie Tavern nearby. Period costume. Informal.
4. Blue Ridge Parkway. A pretty drive, get on or off at Route 60.
